Cedar Spirits Cabinet: Part 3

16/4 plank of Honduran mahogany. Material source for the cabinet stand.

Four legs. Four stretchers. Rift sawn.

Cutting slot mortises.

Sixteen stepped floating tenons.

Below is a short video showing how I configured the stepped mortises at the top of the legs.

All of the tenons are fitted by hand.

I used the tools shown below for the fitting.

Two stage glue-up and the assembly is complete.

All of the outside surfaces of the stand were then hand planed to fit the stand flush with the bottom panel of the cabinet.

Next I set out to tackle a couple of brass brackets to mount the cabinet to the stand.

Surfaces of the brackets and the top of the screws were hand finished with sandpaper.

Feels like progress is being made. The yarns ordered for Carol’s runners that will accompany the piece finally arrived!

Time to cut mortises into the stand for the mounting brackets.

Dry fitting the stand to the cabinet bottom.

I created a small shadow line/reveal using the router and flush-cut bit with a guide bearing and template.

After some edge softening and final surface preparation the stand was ready for a two-coat oil and resin finish.

In Part 4, I’ll wrap up the cabinet assembly.
