American Craft Council Show
We'd like to share a few photos from our first experience at the American Craft Council Saint Paul show in April. We had a great turnout at our booth and met many amazing people during the course of the show...
Studio Tupla Exhibit at Dassel History Center
Carol's Finnish ancestry and Craig's recollections of his formative years in Dassel intersect at the Dassel History Center for this special exhibition.
Crunch Time
The first event of this busy season is almost here. Now it's time to tackle the stack of towels to be hemmed and finished.
Echo Weave
I thought I'd pop by the blog to say the weaving half of Studio Tupla is as busy as ever. Currently on the loom is an adventure in echo weave.
Installing the Dobby
Waiting by the door for the delivery of the new loom upgrades, I was feeling like a little kid on her birthday. I couldn't wait to get at it and take it for a spin!
Next Steps
Often I'm asked what inspires my weaving designs. Inspiration can be found anywhere and everywhere, but there are main themes that keep popping up for me.
Question Authority
Whenever someone says to me, "you must always...," or, "you must never...," I tend to take it with a grain of salt. Because for every great weaver who always does it one way, there is another great weaver who has never done it that way, and vice versa.
Echoing Parquetry
I've been watching Craig create the panels for his book stand, and the rotated squares seem to have resonated with me.
Come on in ― the Water's Fine!
It's been a hot and humid summer so far, and that's no news flash for anyone. Fortunately, I've been able to spend quite a bit of time at our guild teaching classes and private lessons, which I enjoy immensely.
Random Inlay Runners
They say setbacks are opportunities and this time it was certainly true. After I wrenched my back last month, I needed to find a way to ease back into weaving, so I tried some inlay techniques that had been on my list of things to explore.
3 Magic Steps From Squiggles to Cloth
When I first saw a similar version of this spidery looking weaving draft in print, I was intrigued. I liked the geometric, kaleidoscope maze-like nature of it.
Teaching and Doing - A Good Balance
Last week's beginning weaving class was full of truly delightful people, enthusiastic and eager to absorb it all. And like all other classes, I learned from them as well.
Twills and the Rewards of Sampling
Last week I spent time weaving twills with some wonderful students. Every class has its own unique mix of student perspectives and experiences, and this group was absolutely delightful.
New Year Neutrals
We tend to keep our holidays relatively low-key around here, but even so, it seems like the new year brings with it a contrasting quiet.
Finishing Handwoven Textiles
A common perception about handweaving is that it's just throwing a shuttle back and forth, but there is so much more involved in the process, both before and after the shuttle work.
Summer Encore
The leaves are turning to vibrant colors, and while the calendar says it’s autumn, we’re having a nice warm and sunny stretch.
I Like it, But...
The first time my work received a critique that began with "I like it, but...", my spirit sank just a bit, but I quickly learned to recognize this as both a compliment and an opportunity.
Slow Cloth
First there was the Slow Food movement, then Craig began talking about Slow Furniture, and now I'd like to share some thoughts about Slow Cloth.
Pleated Bamboo
Time for some spring colors to make an appearance. Actually, bamboo is an all-weather fiber, and this pale green and blue paired with the white would transition well from icy winter outings to sunny lakeside picnics.
