River Birch Console Table
The client for this piece sent me several pictures of a river birch tree in their backyard that they had planted many years ago. They planned to take the tree down and requested my “help with figuring out if it could be converted into a small table.”
The tree was small, but held some promise. It was milled and kiln-dried before coming to my studio. A small yard-tree like this one is characterized by large growth rings and quite a few knots. This added to the challenge in selecting cuts of wood for the legs and tabletop, but in the end, the character imparted by the natural imperfections in the wood was very satisfying.
