The Cabinets

It's now time to make the cabinets and fit them around the mirror frame. The yellow birch parts are rough cut and machined to thickness, ready for final milling and shaping. In order to form the unifying curve across the front of the piece, I use a long compass that is pinned at one end to the shop floor.

With the compass, I scribe an arc on the cabinet tops (and bottom shelf). On the band saw, I guide a pass freehand that follows the desired curve and bevel. The bevels will later be hand planed to their final dimension and finish.

All of the curves have now been rough cut, and the parts are set-up with the doors (quite a bit over-sized at this point) to get a feel for how the curved cabinets will relate to the mirror frame.

Next will be doweling of the cabinet parts.
